Bailey (age 6) explains how to solve addition problems using what he knows about place value. Love the way Bailey realises he has made a mistake and fixes it up himself!

Best Te Ao Maori MOA Award Finalist- Te Reo in the Playground

This is the wonderful stop motion- animation Bailey and Brydie made to teach others about Te reo they can use. Te Reo is the native language of New Zealand. They used the Stop Motion App to create this animation. They want to make another video to teach others how to make an animation like theirs. Bailey and Brydie are 6 years old.

Room 8 Replies to Blog Comments

Yesterday we published our Earthquake Song online and it has already had hundreds of views and heaps of comments from around the world. Room 8 were so super excited to read the comments from some wonderful bloggers in Tasmania, California, Singapore, Missouri, Auckland, England and Ireland . This was also a great opportunity to look on the map and find out where all these places are, and research more about them.
We replied to some of the comments in writing time this morning, after we discussed what to include in a good comment. We thought it was important to say thank you, and answer the questions asked and give some more information. Some children even asked their own questions. Below are some of the comments we received and the replies in their books in a slideshow, or you can see the comments they typed up here.

Congratulations Brydie!

Friday 31st 2014

Dear Miss Nicholas,

On Friday was prize giving and Brydie and Te Putu’s kapahapa roopu won at puanga 2014. They won a total of 5 awards including overall winner for the under 13yr olds. There were 45 groups performing in that age group from primary and intermediate schools all around Taranaki, and out of them 22 were in the competing group, so out of the 22 competing ours placed first. This win is an awesome achievement that is well deserved and well earned, many hours of practice. These photos attatched are the Taonga / treasures that were awarded to them.
This weeks Taranaki Star has a page about their roopu, and mentions Auroa School as one of the Schools represented within this roopu.

1950s Show Group Notice

Hi Room 8 and Parents,
For the children doing their end of year show with me (1950s), I have made a link at the top of the blog to take you to a page (School Show Resources) with bits to help at home. At the moment there are a few songs and some lyrics. I'm sure if you play these at home, your child would love to show you their dance! Please help your child to practice their moves and lyrics at home!

Room 8 is all ready for Character Costume Day

Brydie's Kapa Haka

On Monday Brydie came to school with a beautiful moko on her chin. She told me all about her Kapa Haka dress rehearsal on the weekend and then she sung me this waiata. She is also very skilled with her poi. Isn't she fantastic? Ka pai Brydie.
Brydie's Kapahaka from Room 8 Auroa on Vimeo.

This is a video (below) of the whole Kapa Haka group performing on the weekend. Brydie is on the front right in this video. You can see Brydie's big brother Te Putu 3rd from the left at the back. You can also hear him play the putatara (conch shell) at the beginning and end.) The group has been practicing for about 4 months and Brydie's Mum is rightly very proud! Their actual performance is next Thursday the 30th of November in Waitara. Good luck Brydie from Room 8.

For our overseas viewers:
Kapa haka is the term for Māori performing arts and literally means to form a line (kapa) and dance (haka). Kapa haka is an avenue for Maori people to express and showcase their heritage and cultural Polynesian identity through song and dance. (From Wikipedia)

A Massive Thank You!

Today we were blown away when Bailey came into school with a big bag of beautiful paint shirts his Nana has sewn for us. We are absolutely thrilled and would like to say a massive thank you to her for her time, thought and costs. The children think they are fantastic and it is great to have paint shirts that fit the children so well and have long sleeves to cover their uniforms. Thank you!!!

A Suprise Visit from Scott Donaldson- Trans-Tasman Kayaker

Today as Room 8 were just getting started on their writing, a tall figure emerged at the door. "That's funny", I thought, "we weren't expecting anyone!"

Very soon though, we realised that the man at the door was Scott Donaldson, the Trans-Tasman Kayaker that Room 8 learnt about when his kayak washed up down the road a few weeks ago. Scott had received a message from Room 8 and enjoyed reading our stories. Scott's beard from the media photos is gone and when Room 8 saw Scott for the first time, they were surprised that he would be able to fit in the tiny kayak hatch.

Scott came in and took a seat in Room 8, and talked with us for about half an hour. He patiently answered all of Room 8's many questions and shared stories from his incredible trip. He told Room 8 of the 20kgs he lost while at sea and the 3m sharks. He told us about losing his rudder and how he combatted loneliness and kept his mind active. Scott told us he spent 5 years planning his journey, and many Room 8 children realised this was how long they had been alive.  We were so excited to hear that he has started planning another expedition. Such an important lesson in perseverance for our children to hear. Scott then brought his kayak into school, and children came out from all the classes to see what was going on, while Scott answered more questions.

Thank you so much for your time Scott, we were honoured to have you at our school today. You were so patient with the children and answered all of their questions seriously.  The class said they thought you were very kind and very, very brave, and your visit gave us something much more exciting to write about today!!!

Patterns by Amelia and Isabella- Using Explain Everything (Check out the video selfie!)

Last week we foucused on using Explain Everything in Room 8. Some of the skills the children have learnt are: how to insert text and change the size, how to insert pictures, how to use a pointer, how to record audio, how to how to insert video, how to upload to Vimeo, and how to take a video selfie! Taking a 'video selfie' was quite a challenging skill for some of the children. Check out Amelia and Isabella's video, and their very cool video selfie at the end!

Skip Counting- Maths Using Explain Everything

Today we used the Explain Everything app to explain how to skip count. This is Sophie and Maddy's presentation. They were even brave enough to ask one of the visiting principals for a photo of his hands. (Unfortunately they also took a terrible photo of me in mid -speak!) I should probably also mention that today was Maddy's first real day at school. Great stuff Maddy and Sophie!

The Missing Kayak Washed Up Outside Room 8! Our writing

Scott Donaldson's kayak that has been lost at sea for months finally washed up today, in South Taranaki, down the road at Otakeho Beach!

Scott tried to cross the Tasman alone in a kayak in July but was winched to safety just 74km off the Taranaki coast after he suffered head and chest injuries and weather conditions deteriorated.

A helicopter that was taking tours around the Mountain spotted the kayak on the beach. It is extremely heavy and had to be lifted by helicopter onto the truck. Sandford's brought it to School for us to check out just as school was finishing today. Look at the free-floating goose barnacles that have been growing on the side! We can't believe how tiny the kayak is- and that someone could spend 3 months living in this at sea!

Here is some of the writing Room 8 did today.

Check out these links for more information.

How to build a Repurposed Bird Feeder

Yesterday, some of the children started making their designs. I worked with the children who's designs were made out of wood. They had a lot of fun building at school and learnt some new skills, like measuring, sanding and using a hammer. We will get the rest of our designs underway tomorrow! I must say I felt a little bit worried holding the boxes while the kids hammered, but they all had great aim. Photos taken by Tessa and Mia
