Pyjama Day


On Friday 27th of June 2014 the School Council at Auroa Primary School held a Pyjama Day to raise funds for Student Council Projects. Nearly the entire school took part in the fundraiser wearing their best Pyjamas and these photographs to document the event were taken by the students from Room One. The students paraded around the school first thing on Friday morning for all the school to see - it was cold and wet but that didn't let our students stop celebrating. 
I was very sad to miss out on this day, as I was away with Mr Chittenden and Miss Davidson for the day, visiting some schools in Fielding. You all looked wonderful!

Skip Counting Maths Rotation- Using Pic Collage

Today, I told the class that I was sick and tired of finding shoes all over the classroom. I said "we must have millions of them". Room 8 told me I was being silly, so i suggested we find out for sure. 

I suggested we count them one at a time, but then Tessa said that it would be much quicker to count them in 2s. 
 As an independent maths rotation, the children took photos of shoes in Pic Collage, then skip counted them in 2s to find out how many there were in total.

Fantstic Numbers 1-23- Georgie, Mia, Jayden and Marley

Today Georgie, Mia, Jayden and Marley had a big job to do during maths. They had to order all their numbers from 1-23, match them with the words, and create tens frames patterns with teddy bears to go with each number. They worked so hard on this for almost an hour, and were really excited to take photos of their maths when they were finished. The children made some great observations all by themselves when they were doing this.

Jayden said "Wow, 23 is a lot lot longer than the other numbers!".
Mia and Georgie discovered that to make teen numbers with tens frames, the 1 in the number means you need 10, and the second part tells you how many you need on the other tens frame.
Georgie also challenged herself by starting at 23, and working backwards. She got really good at working out the number before.
Marley worked really hard sounding out the words and matching them to each number.

They are looking forward to teaching others in the class how to do this tomorrow.

How to Make Jelly- How to show the steps in GIF Images

How to Turn Your Videos into GIF images

Today while we were making jelly, I took some short videos of each step, using my iPad. I used the Ipad app 5S Gif to turn the videos into 5 second Gif images. I then uploaded them to PhotoBucket (any photo storage website will work), which provides a HTML code, which allows me to embed them on my blog.  Tomorrow, when we continue our writing the children will easily be able to see each step.

How to Make Jelly- By Mia

Today in Room 8 we made jelly, then we had our first go at writing a recipe. I was so impressed with Mia today. All her steps were in order and each step started with a verb. She wrote this without any help at all, and came to show me when she finished. 

Tomorrow, if our jelly sets, we will get to eat it and we will think about our 5 senses! Photos/ videos of jelly making to come. 

This is what Mia wrote. 
1. Boil the jug with hot water in it. 
2. Open the jelly. 
3. Tip in the jelly.
4. Pour in the hot water. 
5. Mix the jelly. 
6. Put the jelly in the fridge.

My Disgusting Dinner- Room 8's Writing

A few days ago, I forgot about my dinner at home and ended up with a a horrible, inedible disaster! The whole house filled with smoke, and I still can't get rid of the smell. I came to school and told the Room 8 Rainbows about it and we talked about when we'd all had disgusting dinners. (Some parents will be pleased to know that a few children said they'd never had a disgusting dinner! They did a great job imagining.) We used a Sheena Cameron Planning template to plan in detail, and today we turned our plans into stories. Our goals for today were to use an interesting beginning, put ideas in order and make our story funny to read. Some early finishers got to publish their writing today, and it was very difficult for me to choose which to publish to the blog! They would love your comments and feedback about their writing.

Making up our Own Word Problems

We solve lots of word problems in Room 8, but today I gave the children number sentences to solve using Educreations. I was very impressed when they ALL came back and had turned to number sentences into their own word problems, without me even asking. I think this shows a great understanding of what the numbers actually mean, in a real life context.

The Wild Wet Wellington Wind- Read by Mya, Quinn and Marley using Puppet Pals

Marley, Mya and Quinn have been working on using expression when they read. Today they enjoyed reading this book and finding the interesting verbs. They tried to get louder when they repeated the sentences.

Mya's Speech Marks!

We read big books every day in Room 8 for shared reading. This term we have been looking carefully at different types of punctuation, and how we respond to them as we we read. So far, we have been learning about full stops, commas, speech marks, exclamation marks and question marks.
I was very impressed when Mya included speech marks in her writing today without being prompted, and they were even in the right place! 

Mia and Marley-Counting back using Educreations

Check out what Mia and Marley made today using Educreations. They are learning to count backwards from the highest number using a numberline. They made the problem using teddybears. Some are in the 'cave' as they are imaging part of the problem in their head.
They took a photo, and added a number line into their creation.

The Big City- Adding Verbs to our Writing.

When we came back to school on Tuesday, Miss Nicholas told the class about her weekend in Auckland. We discussed things that we might see in a city that would be different from Auroa. 
We then watched this short film about the big city of New York. We found where NY was on our big map. 





We talked about all the things we saw in the video (nouns), and what those things were doing (verbs). The children made a brainstorm in their books. Today, they put 2 of their ideas together and published their sentence on Padlet. Here is the result.
