Junior STEAM - Deconstruction

As part of junior STEAM (Science, Technology, Arts, and Maths) at Auroa School, I take a group for 'Deconstruction'. The children use screwdrivers and other tools to open broken appliances, and see what's inside. Look how involved they all are! So far they have pulled apart fax machines, cd players, and a toasted sandwich maker. They have been asking lots of great questions about how things work and coming up with some great theories. We've even done some online research when sometimes I didn't know.  We'd love some more broken appliances (with the cords cut off) if you have any at home. Things with moving parts inside are interesting.

Counting on from the Highest Number

Some children in Room 8 have been learning to solve addition problems by counting on from the highest number. Watch these children solve their problems using a number line.

Making butter- Science

Room 8 has been finding out about different things that can change into something else. We put cream in a jar and shook it really hard. We discovered that the cream separated (just like when we made curds and whey) and formed a solid and a liquid. The solid was butter and the liquid was butter milk. We enjoyed trying the butter on bread, and Mrs Derbyshire used the left over butter milk to make pancakes. This got us wondering if we could change milk/ cream into anything else.  Have you ever made butter before?
